2013 College Rankings & Higher Education's New Caste System
2013 College Rankings and Higher Education's New Caste System In Collaboration with the Washington Monthly On September 4, 2013, at the New America Foundation's Washington D.C. offices, details of the 2013 Washington Monthly College Rankings will be unveiled and discussed by an assembled panel of experts. The rankings, released annually since 2005, provide an alternative to traditional college scoring systems, which often end up capturing the 'prestige' of colleges, rather than their ability to improve social mobility, promote public service, and generate high quality research. The theme of the 2013 College Rankings, and the discussion that will take place at New America, is "Higher Education's New Caste System". For the better part of a century, higher education has operated under a compact with its citizens. Taxpayers would fund the basic research that sustains economic growth, and in return tuition at public institutions would remain low enough that middle- and lower-class students can afford degrees. Our assembled experts will debate how that compact appears to be breaking down in front of our eyes. With plummeting state support and skyrocketing tuition, our flagship public universities are increasingly becoming, like elite private colleges, strongholds of the wealthy (including rich foreign students). Meanwhile, lower-income and minority students seem to increasingly being channeled to lower-prestige "open access" colleges where spending per pupil and graduation rates are roughly half as high. Instead of being an engine of equal opportunity, higher education therefore seems to increasingly be a driver of inequality. AGENDA Opening Remarks Jamie P. Merisotis President and CEO, Lumina Foundation Panel Jamaal Abdul-Alim Journalist and Spencer Education Journalism Fellow, Columbia University Kevin Carey Director, Education Policy Program, New America Foundation James Kvaal Deputy Director, White House Domestic Policy Council Diana Natalicio President, University of Texas at El Paso Moderator Paul Glastris Editor in Chief, Washington Monthly http://newamerica.net/events/2013/higher_educations_new_caste_system- published: 05 Sep 2013

Designing a university for the new millennium: David Helfand at TEDxWestVancouverED
Following 35 years on the faculty of Columbia University in New York, more than half of that time as Chair of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Dr. Helfand developed a deep understanding of the problems of traditional universities. Seizing an opportunity to redesign higher education from scratch, he has served as a Founding Tutor and, since 2008, as President and Vice Chancellor of Quest University Canada. He is also President of the American Astronomical Society, the professional society for astronomers, astrophysicists, planetary scientists and solar physicists in North America. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)- published: 08 Jun 2013

The New Mediators
The New Mediators is a design practice that helps to clarify complicated situations. By designing graphic language systems that function across print, video, interactive and performance formats, it proposes a new role for designers and a new approach to transparency in an increasingly complex world.
New Mediators are practitioners who combine methods from design, journalism, and narrative analysis. The result is designed transparency — information that is not only made available, but accessible, relevant and beautiful.
This introductory animation attempts the method advocated by the New Mediators to explain the project itself.

The New America
A few frames still remain for purchase here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/166690806/randomly-selected-one-of-a-kind-laser
"The New America" is a short animation in which every frame was created by laser engraving its unique artwork onto a solid block of maple. Once complete, the entire sequence of +800 frames was then photographed and assembled into this motion piece.
This piece was funded by really kind friends and supporters via Kickstarter. After many unforeseen issues and delays, the entire process took about two years.
As seen in the video, each frame is unique. Aside from the design of each frame itself being distinct, small variances that naturally occur in the laser engraving process as well as the different wood grain of each frame naturally created subtle shifts of the position of the artwork. An effect that I was particularly interested in and that could naturally be achieved in digital assembly, but that I was much more excited about re-creating with real objects.
The music was carefully crafted by my amazing friends at World Gang - http://music.world-gang.com
The abstract storyline showcased in this piece is a concoction of a variety of ideas and can perhaps be described as a union between concepts and experiments born during the Situationist movement and real life events experienced during the last few years in American society. Particularly the duality between the economic downturn and the shift in values and beliefs of many citizens.
If you decide to purchase one of these frames, please note that I will randomly select one of them. Please, do not request a particular frame.
* The credits at the end are for sale.
